Our Story

Lane in the Woods is a family farm run by the Lane family, who live with their small herd of milk cows near Marshall, North Carolina. Kate and Kevin have been milking cows since 2009 and started making cheese in earnest in 2020, after constructing their creamery and acquiring the necessary equipment.

The Lane family began selling raw milk under the name "Homemade in Marshall" to the Marshall and Asheville areas in 2010. The name was inspired by their blog of the same name, which documented the DIY construction of their house. After completing their house, the raw milk business carried on the name, and the blog continued to chronicle their journey in milking cows.

The Lane family's lifestyle revolves around milking, cheesemaking, and participating in weekly farmers markets. This way of life is rooted in tradition but is becoming increasingly unique in modern times. The Lanes remain inspired by the simple beauty of being around cows and the creative and fascinating process of making cheese.
